CARING FOR PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: CAREGIVER BURDEN, SUPPORT NETWORKS, AND CHALLENGES OF HOME-BASED CARE

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that compromises individual autonomy and imposes a high demand for care within the home setting. This study aimed to analyze the burden experienced by both family and formal caregivers, as well as the role of support networks in mitigating the challenges associated with caregiving. This is an integrative literature review conducted through searches in the PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, and LILACS databases, using descriptors related to AD, caregivers, burden, and social support. The findings indicate that factors such as anticipatory grief, stigma, clinical progression of the disease, and insufficient formal support intensify caregivers’ physical and emotional strain. Conversely, structured support networks and psychoeducational interventions are shown to be essential in reducing caregiver burden and strengthening coping strategies. It is concluded that care for individuals with AD must integratively address the health and support needs of family caregivers, thereby ensuring dignity and well-being throughout the disease trajectory.
